Sri Lanka’s ceramic industry has its fingers crossed for lesser regulation of mining practices under the new Government in order to improve productivity and reduce imports.

Sri Lanka has a rare raw material required for the manufacture of ceramic products, which is also in great demand in the global market. This should be exploited by the industry with niche products, enabling it to fetch high prices, Noritake Lanka Porcelain (Pvt) Ltd, Chairman/Managing Director Hidenori Tanaka told the 16th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Ceramics and Glass Council in Colombo last week.

Sri Lanka’s ceramic industry is seeking the support of the new government to locally source raw materials for high value-added exports amid the country’s only refined kaolin production plant being recently shut down amidst lack of clarity in policies.

Sri Lanka has over supply of multi-purpose raw material to produce clay bricks which has a huge global demand, Managing Director, De Boer Damle (India) Pvt. Ltd, Anand Damle said

Export Development Board (EDB) Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer Indira Malwatte urged the Sri Lanka Ceramic and Glass Council (SLCGC) to set a target to double the exports from 0.5 percent to 1 percent of merchandise exports within a period five years.

The apex body of Sri Lanka’s ceramic and glass industry recently urged the government to re-evaluate its trade liberalisation agenda, tax structure and energy prices to boost exports and to control the low grade ceramic products being dumped into the country.

The Sri Lanka Ceramics and Glass Council believes expansion is possible through product diversification and technology transfer to substantially raise export revenue and regain lost ground in international and domestic markets, if provided with Government support.
